Diverse Thinking Governance Summit 2018 – Helen Potiki, Acting Chief Executive, Ministry for Women

Why the MINISTRY FOR WOMEN MINITATANGA MO NGA WAHINE is supporting the Summit: a word from HELEN POTIKI, Acting Chief Executive, Ministry for Women and presenter at the Summit

The theme of our Suffrage 125 celebrations this year is Whakatū Wāhine – stand tall and proud. While we acknowledge this historic achievement, and how far we have come as the first country in the world where women could vote, it’s also a time to build a more inclusive society.

New Zealand women are diverse: their backgrounds, experiences, needs, and priorities are not all the same. The Ministry for Women wants to meet the needs and support the aspirations of all women and girls and their communities through a focus on improving outcomes for Māori, Pacific, and other diverse cultures, those that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexed (LGBTI), and those with disabilities.

The Ministry for Women values women in all their diversity and believes that everyone has an important voice and valuable ideas. When we talk about diversity, our focus is on the communities we serve – the women and girls of New Zealand. This Summit provides an opportunity to come together to celebrate diversity, collectively listen and learn from each other, challenge our thoughts, and grow our diverse thinking.
