Diverse Thinking Governance Summit 2018-Venasio-Lorenzo Crawley, Future Director for the Warehouse Group, AUT Advisory Board

Venasio-Lorenzo Crawley, Member of Board of Directors (Future) for The Warehouse Group, Director of AUT Advisory Board, Electricity Retailers of New Zealand, and Chief Customer Officer of Contact Energy,  is presenting on the panel on ‘IoD’s Future Director programme and how to jumpstart your governance career’ at the Diverse Thinking Governance Summit on 19 November 2018 at Spark City, Auckland. He has shared his thoughts on why diverse thinking matters.

The title: ‘Jump start my governance career’ is not quite my reason for accepting this fantastic opportunity. I had a different motivation – which I’ll get to in a moment. The question I have for anyone participating in this programme, and actually, for boards in general, is this: what opportunity and problem you are trying to solve?

I am immensely grateful to Sir Stephen Tindall and Joan Withers for selecting and investing in me. I’d never heard of the programme until I had been tapped on the shoulder, so it was a wonderful discovery for me. I aligned strongly with the vision to help NZ-Inc flourish by investing in talent that some of our best business leaders could see as future board directors.

That said, I would encourage boards to be clear on what opportunity and problem they are trying to solve with these appointments and therefore select the capability and experience they need on this basis. It’s equally important that we be clear on what opportunity the candidate sees in joining the IoD Future Directors programme.
