Nobel laureate professor Muhammad Yunus has received the 2019 Global Women’s Leadership Award at the Global Summit of Women in Basel, Switzerland.
Professor Yunus was awarded on 5th July for his internationally recognised work in poverty alleviation and economic empowerment of women globally through his pioneering work of microfinance and social business, according to a press release issued by the Yunus Centre in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The Global Summit of Women is a project of the Global Women Research and Education Institute, an organisation based in Washington, DC, USA.
The award considered the impact of the innovative programmes through which millions of poor women around the world were inspired to fulfil their potentialities by taking up entrepreneurial activities to generate income and in turn establish their economic freedom and individual dignity.
Over 1,200 leaders in business and government from 65 countries around the world attended this year’s premier business and economic forum for women which have been taking place for the last 29 years.
The theme of this year’s summit was ‘Women: Redefining Success.’
The Global Summit of Women was conceived as the nexus at which all sectors — public, private and nonprofit — would come together under the common vision of expanding women’s economic opportunities globally through exchanges of working solutions and creative strategies forged by women leaders from different parts of the world. It is a business summit, whose ‘business’ focus is women’s advancement in the global economy.
The summit featured pre-summit round table for Women Government Ministers on best practices in public/private sector partnerships for advancing women’s economic opportunities; plenary sessions which covered regional and global trends that impact economies around the world; discussion forums with male CEOs and women CEOs as well as strategic direction from women entrepreneurs succeeding in the global economy.
There were also skills-building sessions in three tracks: leadership development, entrepreneurial and other issues.
Notable speakers and guests included: Sung Joo Kim, chair and chief visionary officer, MCM Holdings AG, Martin Jetter, Chairman, IBM Europe, Christine Schmid, Managing Director, Credit Suisse, Mai Chen, board director, Bank of New Zealand, Gurveen Singh, chief human resources officer, Reckitt Benckiser, UK, Carolina Muller-Mohl, president, Muller-Mohl Group, Inga Legasova, CEO, Remi Ling, Jill Ader, chair, Egon Zehnder, United Kingdom, Muriel Penicaud, minister for labour, France, Saara Kuugongelwa-amadhila, prime minister of Namibia and Atifete Jahjaga, former president of Kosovo.
The 2019 Summit has 9 global members including the International Federation of Business and Professional Women and the Women’s Presidents Organisation (USA) and more than 60 international partners that include national trade and commerce associations from all over the world.
